NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop (September 2020)
This workshop is presented by Team Snap and introduces fundamental movement skills and core competencies of the NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program). The program was all about increasing children’s physical literacy by giving them confidence and competence to try new things. In this workshop, I learned how to detect and correct common errors that arise when children are learning fundamental movements skills. I also learned how to properly and effectively teach fundamental movement skills. This portion of the workshop included things, such as adapting fundamental movement skills for students with a disability, giving students feedback that will help encourage development, and leading activities that are all stage orientated (developing fundamental movement skills one stage at a time).
Katy Bigsby’s Dealing with Difficult and Challenging Behaviours workshop
The Katy Bigsby’s Dealing with Difficult and Challenging Behaviors workshop was an online workshop that I completed in two portions. The first portion is a 2-hour webinar that looked at proactive strategies that can help to minimize challenging behaviors. The second half was all case scenario-based. Where I and other participants role-played scenarios that have happened in our past. Here we got to look at strategies with Katy that could help us in the future. This seminar was very helpful as we got to dive into actual problems and find ways to better resolve them. It also allowed us to not only look at problems that have occurred in my own programs but also at other participants’ programs.
Canucks Autism Network (CAN)
Through my work with the After School Sports and Arts Initiative (ASSAI) I also received training from the Canucks Autism Network. This was a one-time three-hour online training session. It was designed to provide autism training to the sports community. It gave me some tangible ideas to try in my programs as well as that I can transfer to my future teaching. One thing that this network focuses on is supporting positive behavior. This means that whenever you see the desired behavior you focus on rewarding this rather than punishing unfavorable behaviors. This was a useful resource and I would really like to attend another training conference through CAN in the future.
