I made this lesson plan for my first practicum in a grade 5/6 class. Previously to this lesson we had worked on theme identification three other times. This is one of my favorite lessons because it is very indigenously inspired and it contains a lot of different ways for students to become engaged and learn. This lesson plan involves six stations where students identify themes in short films, poetry, and short stories. It also focuses on group work where students are assigned specific tasks to maximize the effectiveness of group roles.
This unit plan is designed for a grade two course to work on the class community at the beginning of the year. In this unit, each student creates a page about themselves and a drawing about themselves. By the end of the unit, we combine all the individual pages to form a book. This will be our classroom book and represents our community classroom coming together. In this unit, we also learn how to share through sharing circles which will become a powerful tool that we use for the rest of the school year.
